about

" There is something to be said about art that cautiously keeps emotional ends loose. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it surely allows space for our imagination to rejoice.

Admittedly ‘Ambit’ can be described as dark and melancholic, but just wait till you get through the whole thing! The aftertaste is rich and full of nuance and contradiction. Mixed feel and alternations between harsh and soft, expansive and abrupt, wistful and grieving are characteristic of the EP’s flow and DEER’s debut musical statement.

Some of this ambiguity is apparent even in the simplest of tracks, like the medial ‘P22’, which proves that the uncanny can be evoked just from within the tone of a single instrument, ahead of composition or arrangement.

Constantly evolving arrangements, fat synth sounds and drum machines are the main vehicles of communication. Through the journey one connects with a multitude of aural and sentimental textures and as with any left-field electronic piece with cinematic tendencies, atmosphere is key. The occasional use of guitar, samples and field recordings build on this beautifully. The opening track ‘112’ is a potent introduction to the cannon.

Despite its mostly electronic, and generally heavily processed sound, ‘Ambit’ is spectacularly successful in painting naturalistic soundscapes. Usually to be followed or disrupted by industrial-grade apparitions.
A thin slice of Boards of Canada can be identified somewhere within the trippiness, serenity and organic intricacy. As for the synthetic side, Deer seem to draw from the plethora of dub-inspired electronica offered by artist like Burial, Demdike Stare and Andy Stott.

Ambit is a majestic beast, in content and sheer sound presence. It’s energy is masterfully balanced. It can be introvert like a deer, both in its moments of delicacy and in the sense that it constantly steers away from the crowded path; and also devastating like a giant excavator ripping through dirt and stone with mechanical relentlessness.
